COMMON SUSPENSIONS AND HOW TO FIX THEM

  • Traffic Tickets:  If you have missed a deadline for paying or contesting a ticket, your license will be suspended until you pay the ticket or set it for a court hearing. If your traffic ticket is for Driving with a Suspended License, speak with an attorney before paying the ticket–your license could be suspended for 5 years. Remember that some traffic infractions might include points, so if you have multiple unpaid tickets, call Jordan Law to determine if you are at risk for long term suspension and whether you can avoid some of the points.
  • Court Fines:  Unpaid fines from closed court cases will be sent to a collections agency (and increased by 30%), and a suspension will be placed on your license. To remove your fines from collections and reduce the required payments, an attorney may be able to file a motion with the court to reinstate your payment plan.
  • DUI Classes:  Even if you are no longer on probation, your license will be suspended until you complete the required treatment, classes, or other requirements. Once completed, you can take the clearance letter to the DMV to reinstate your license
  • Drug Suspension:  Currently, convictions for most drug crimes include a one-year license suspension. If your license is otherwise valid, you may be eligible for a Business Purposes Only license after 6 months.
  • Insurance, Child Support, Out of State Suspensions:  Typically resolved through getting insurance, paying child support, or consulting with the out of state DMV. Jordan Law may be able to advise you on the most efficient way to remove these license suspensions.
  • Habitual Traffic Offender (HTO):  If you have been convicted of any 3 of the following charges–driving while license suspended, DUI, 15 moving offenses, Leaving the Scene of an Accident with Death–you are eligible to lose your license for 5 years. If you are charged with any of these crimes, consult with an attorney before entering a plea to protect your license!

Moving Violations:

  • Child restraint violation – 3
